What is a scatter symbol?

A scatter is a special symbol whose role is defined by the individual game. Unlike a regular symbol that may need to land on a particular payline, a scatter often counts across different positions on the reels.

In some games, collecting enough scatters triggers a feature such as free spins. In others, scatters can award a payout or have a different role. The required number, eligible positions, and feature behavior vary, so a rule from one title should not be assumed to apply to another.

Look for the symbol in the paytable

Open the game's information or help panel and locate the scatter illustration. Read its trigger conditions and any restrictions. The on-screen rules are the best place to understand what that symbol does in the version you are viewing.

Seeing scatters on a previous spin does not mean a feature is due on the next one. A scatter symbol is a game mechanic, not a promise of a win.

Getting started

How to read a game's rules

A game's artwork tells you its theme; its help panel tells you how it works. Look for an information icon, a question mark, or a menu item labeled “Paytable” or “Rules.”

  1. Find the winning combinations. Check whether the game uses paylines, ways, or clusters, and how many matching symbols are required.
  2. Read the special-symbol descriptions. Note what wilds substitute for and how scatters trigger features. Check for exceptions.
  3. Check the bet display. Understand the total amount shown for a spin and whether an optional feature changes that amount.
  4. Read feature rules separately. Free spins, respins, and other modes may follow different rules from the base game.

If a description is unclear, consult the game's help text before taking an action. Familiarity with another title is not a substitute for reading this one's rules.

Glossary

Slot terms in plain English

Paytable
The in-game reference for symbol values, winning combinations, and feature rules.
Wild
A symbol that can substitute for certain other symbols. The game's rules explain any exclusions.
Payline
A defined path across the reels used to evaluate a winning combination.
Cluster
A group of matching symbols connected in the way the game specifies, rather than arranged along a payline.
Cascade or tumble
A mechanic in which symbols are removed and new ones take their place, often after a winning combination.
Multiplier
A value that scales an eligible payout. Its scope and duration depend on the feature rules.
Base game
The standard mode of a game, outside a separate bonus or feature mode.

These are general explanations. A provider may use different names or apply a term in a specific way, so always check the title's own help panel.
